New to the Coast?

Volunteering might be the best place to start.

There’s something about spring on the Sunshine Coast that invites you to root in a little deeper. Maybe it’s the return of longer days, or the first farmers' markets of the season — but for many, it’s also the time to connect. If you’re new here, or simply ready to meet people and feel more involved, volunteering might be the most rewarding place to begin.

April 12, the annual Volunteer Fair in Sechelt brought together dozens of local organizations, all looking for help — and offering connection in return. From environmental groups to food security programs, arts festivals to housing nonprofits, the room was full of purpose and possibility. Janai attended on behalf of Habitat for Humanity, where she sits on the Board of Directors, Even if you missed it, it’s not too late — most of those groups are still looking for help.

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to giving back. Some roles are hands-on, others behind the scenes. Some ask for a few hours a month, others become a rhythm in your life. Rachel is involved with SCCSS’s 50 Women for Success, focused on raising funds and awareness for vulnerable women and children — and many other programs are just as welcoming to newcomers and curious locals alike.

And here’s the real secret: volunteering isn’t just about giving your time. It’s about finding your people. The Sunshine Coast can feel quiet and close-knit at first — but through service, conversations spark, friendships grow, and a sense of belonging begins to take shape.
